A Sew-Along Envelope Clutch

Did you hop on Kate's sew along last week?  I was so excited when I saw she was hosting another (who doesn't love a good See Kate Sew sew along?), and that it was a clutch made it all the better.  I love clutches.  It was such a fun, easy, fast project.  Although I did run into a few snags along the way.

One day last week I decided to brave the traffic and took the drive into the city (rather than the train like i usually do-it's only about a 20 minute drive if you can dodge traffic, but i hate finding parking) and hit up a new-to-me fabric shop.  I'm so glad I did!  Right away I found this great cerulean blue and white faux bois fabric that I knew would be great for this clutch.  So I ran home (after much himming and hawwing over a few other fabrics i eventually bought for a dress for abi and some pillows) and went through my stash for a button and lining fabric.

I found the perfect shade of red apparel lining and a matching red button and got to work.  Here is where things got a little tricky the first time.  The faux bois is a home decor weight and I backed it with heavy interfacing to give it a even a little more body. And the lining is super light weight and kept being pushed around by the faux bois - it wouldn't stay pressed down.  I was so frustrated!  Then I realized there was an easy solution - a top stitch!

Problem one was barely solved when problem two showed up, or rather, didn't show up.  I could not find my button hole foot anywhere!  I still cant so I just ordered one from Amazon (along with a new sewing machine!).  In the mean time I just sewed the button onto the flap and it's good to go!

If you didn't make one this week, you can still get the free pattern HERE and try your hand at it.  Better late than never, right?
