Refinishing a Dresser {part 1}

I had a different post planned for today, but my power drill battery was dead.  So you'll get to see that one in a few days, or when I get around to it :)

But I thought I'd show you what I did with my Saturday night while my husband worked late.

I bought this dresser last summer from a neighbor.  It was part of a set with a matching highboy and huge mirror.  I didn't run this purchase by my husband first so it resulted in having all money spending priviledges (besides chaperoned grocery trips) revoked for a month.  Such a bummer, but so worth it :)

We'll, it's been sitting in the garage or a shed since then and I figured it was about time to do something about it.  We have the perfect spot for a buffet, but no buffet.  This dresser fits the bill perfectly though.

But the poly was flaking off horribly and it was just really discolored and gross.  So a good strip down was in order.  I used the recommendation from All Things Thrifty to use Citristrip to get the paint off.  She said that it was totally fine to use in the house and you don't need gloves.  Perfect since it was scheduled to rain.  And boy was she right.  It was great!

With in seconds of painting the stripper on, it was already bubbling.  It was pretty cool.  My husband was even impressed.

After the 30 minutes I just grabbed the putty knife and started scrapping.  It just slide right off.  Pretty awesome.

I stripped it down twice to get it to the bare wood.  You don't need to get it that clean if you're going to paint.  But the wood was so gorgeous that I thought I might stain it instead of painting.  But the more I think about it, I think I'll stick with painting.

I got the body done in just under three hours and I can't wait to get started on the drawers!

Now, what color should I paint it?

  1. Hi Missy,
    like your new blog, came here from SYTYC.
    What sort of weird financial arrangement do you have with you husband? Or are you just joking and I have missed the point?

  2. Oh, It was sort of a joke :) We had just started a new job at the time and didn't really have a lot of fun money, and those dressers weren't super cheap. He just got mad that I had spent so much without even running it by him first. He's really not an awful person like that. In fact he puts up with way more than a husband probably should. I don't think he fully understood what he was getting himself into when he married a DIYer with expensive tastes :)
